TET Athletics Taranaki is always on the lookout for new coaches to help us develop the substantial amount of talent we have around the region. There are a number of different avenues into coaching but the first, and perhaps most important step, is to simply join a club and start helping out!
Get Set Go
The Get Set Go programme was developed by Athletics New Zealand to meet the needs of 3 - 7 year olds in athletics. The programme focuses on teaching fundamental movements through exploration and games. For more information on Get Set Go click the link below:
Get Set Go.
Athletics Taranaki does not provide any specific coaching courses for Get Set Go but are able to provide resources and assistance in implementing the course when requested.
Run Jump Throw
The Run Jump Throw programme is aimed at young people between the ages of 7 and 13 and is built around the 150 page Run-Jump-Throw manual which provides a progressive approach to athletic skill teaching. Athletics New Zealand are currently in the process (July 2017) of updating resources available around Run Jump Throw which should make the delivery of Run Jump Throw more accessible. Run Jump Throw
Athletics Taranaki currently offers Run Jump Throw coaching courses to all clubs in Taranaki at the beginning of each season, as well as by request when times are available. This course is available to any parents, volunteers, or coaches in clubs who would like to assist more with the week to week coaching of young athletes in their club.
The IAAF Coaching Education and Certification System is the next logical step for aspiring coaches. The IAAF coaching certification is recognised around the world and is a great opportunity to start learning how to coach the different disciplines to athletes who already understand the basics. The IAAF Level 1 and Level 2 certifications are held in NZ when there is a demand. Together, these courses are held over six intensive weekends and cover everything from running the IAAF Kid's Athletics day, to detailed breakdown of the major disciplines and how to coach them.
